Games You Can Play with a Set of Dominoes

Posted by

Dominoes are great for all games because they are compact, easy to see and don't blow away like playing cards.

Here's a list of games you can play with dominoes:

BLOCK is a game that ends when no players can take a turn. Each player matches an existing tile with a domino from their hand. If no player is able to match the tile the game is over. IF the game is able to continue till one of the players ran out of tiles then he or she calls out “Domino” and wins the game!

DRAW is also similar to BLOCK; however, instead of just using the tiles in your hand, you may continue to draw more domino tiles from the “boneyard” if you can’t play from your hand. Otherwise the play would continue like the game of Block with the winner being the first to get rid of all the dominoes in her hand.

CROSS is similar to the game of DRAW; however, the game starts differently. When a person plays a double, a “spinner” is created. Tiles must be played on both ends and both sides so that it forms a five-domino cross before any other dominoes can be played.

MUGGINS (A unique in dominoes because of the way it is scored. If one misses a score an opponent may call out “Muggins” and steal the score for herself.)

CONCENTRATION is similar to the card game “Concentration” - players do not have hands, but play from the domino tiles on the table. This game is played with a Double-Six set; however, larger game sets will support more players. First the dominoes are shuffled (mixed), then they are arranged into a 4 X 7 grid face down. Each player will turn over two tiles when it is his / her turn to play. If the number on the two tiles add up to 12 (Example: 4-3 plus 4-1) remove them from the grid and set them aside, and take another turn. If the two dominoes do not add up to 12, turn them back over and pass the play to the next player. When you play this game with a larger domino game set such as Double-Twelve you will make the pairs that total 24 (instead of 12). And if you are using the Double - 9 set make the pairs total 18 (instead of 12).

BINGO - the domino game (NOT the lottery version). This game is played by two people and lasts around 5 to 10 minutes. The double-six set is used. The object of the game is the first player to score seven sets becomes the winner.

CHICKENFOOT  is a very popular domino game.  Many Double-Twelve game sets are packaged with both Chickenfoot and Mexican Train domino hubs as the tiles and accessories from these sets may play both games. The object of Chickenfoot is to get the least possible amount of points (same thing in Mexican Train). It's similiar to Mexican Train dominoes except the double must be answered three times.  The three prong formation looks like a chickenfoot.

Mexican Train is one of the most popular domino games. It can be played by kids and seniors. You simply match your dominoes up to the domino that starts the game. This game uses a domino hub, trains for each player, domino racks, and chickens for marking doubles. See MexicanTrainDominoes rules for complete rules
